Wild Mustang Trail-Winter Trek

Writer's picture: Mark L. JohnsonMark L. Johnson

Hiked the Wild Mustang Trail on 12/1/24. Started early to catch the sunrise up in the mountains. A fantastic and gorgeous hike with plenty of beautiful vistas. The Wild Mustang Trail traverses through a very remote area of Marana and portion of Pima County Tortolita Mountain Park. Nice and quiet---can't even hear the trains! Once again, no wild horses seen. Maybe next time!

Route: Wild Burro→Upper Javelina→ Wild Mustang→Wild Burro→Alamo Springs→ Alamo Springs Spur→Wild Burro

Stats: 9 miles - up/down 1,450' - 2.8 mph

Trail Conditions: excellent, very dry, lots of dried-out knee-high grass

Although fairly long with a decent elevation gain, I high recommend this hike if you have not done it before. For those who are unable, below is a link to a one-minute 3-D video of the track and some photos.

Happy Holidays!
