In late March, Town of Marana (Marana) officials informed the Tortolita Alliance (TA) that Marana had engaged with the Arizona State Land Department (ASLD) regarding the potential acquisition of the Tortolita Preserve (TP) for open space/land conservation purposes. This proposed acquisition would eliminate the current 99-year lease and protect TP in perpetuity. They also indicated that Marana would be meeting with the new ASLD Commissioner (Robyn Sahid) in the near future.
Marana Town Manager (Terry Rozema) has just informed TA that the meeting with ASLD did take place and it went well and ASLD is open to the acquisition of TP by Marana. The potential land acquisition process is in the very early stages and various issues, including the ASLD land sale bidding process and acquisition funding, will need to be resolved.
The acquisition of TP by Marana or another public or private entity for perpetual open space/land conservation purposes has been a long-term TA goal. We have offered to help in any way and already provided some land acquisition ideas.
